Bloody Bay Wall Set to Shine in Museum of Natural History

In 1999, underwater photographer Jim Hellemn shot a series of photos of Little Cayman's Bloody Ball Wall that appeared in National Geographic magazine. He returned 11 years later to document the world-famous site, and the results are set to debut on 72 super high-res monitors - measuring 10 feet high by 35 feet wide - in New York's Museum of Natural History. While visually stunning, Hellemn's photography is also helping marine scientists at the Central Caribbean Marine Institute track changes and environmental impacts. "We are looking at a 10-year comparison of reef biological diversity and reef health," said the CCMI's Carrie Manfrino. "In particular, we will examine corals, sponges, and algae to see whether there are visual changes in the amounts of these important reef components."

Two Nations Are Born

The world welcomed its newest countries in October, when Curaçao and St. Maarten became autonomous. The change in status - autonomous countries that retain direct ties with Holland - means little for traveling divers except that with increased tax dollars flowing in, the two countries' tourism infrastructures are likely to get a boost. "With this historic change brings huge potential for growth in our tourism landscape," said Curaçao Tourist Board executive director Hugo Clarinda.

Poor Little Pelican

While Gulf Coast locals, fisherman, politicians and environmentalists are still reeling from the Deep Horizon oil spill, there's another demographic that's been affected just as much: children. A new children's' book, The Gulf Coast Oil Spill: Poor Little Pelican, tells the story of a family of pelicans, their discovery of the oil spill and its aftermath. "After all," says author Carole Marsh, "they see us make a mess, but what they want to know is how to help, how to avoid such problems in the future, and most especially, how they can grow up and make a difference." Marsh is CEO and founder of Gallopade International, which produces children's books and educational materials, and hopes this latest addition will educate and inspire kids to make an environmental difference in their own way.
