The former USS Kittiwake is scheduled to be sunk in Grand Cayman on Tuesday, July 27, and will become a new underwater shipwreck and artificial reef attraction for divers. The Sinking Week's events commence on July 21 after the Kittiwake arrives to undergo final preparations. - The Diving Equimpment & Marketing Association (DEMA) recently launched gulfstatediving.com, which updates vacationers and water sports enthusiasts with "real-time" posts by dive stores, dive boat operations and other dive industry-related businesses in the Gulf State region. - BP plans to deploy 32 of actor Kevin Costner's V20 oil-cleaning centrifuge machines, designed to separate oil from water. For more info, click here.
- Let's not forget about the sea creatures being affected: The Virginia Aqaurium Marine Animal Care Center released 12 sea turtles, making room for more turtles in need. They are on standby to assist with any sea turtles harmed in the Gulf. To read more, click here.

Ocean Athlete, a lifestyle apparel brand for divers, has launched a website offering dive-specific sportswear. The brand also offers customers the opportunity to contribute to Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba (SUDS), the program for injured and disabled combat veterans, through the purchase of a specially designed SUDS tee shirt. Through volunteers and donations, veterans are trained to dive, giving them a newfound appreciation for the sport as well as promoting physical rehabilitation and mobility. "In addition to showing our support of all combat vets, we hope to raise awareness and financial donations for this unique scuba program and the courageous men and women for whom it does so much," said Duane Willis, founder and president of Ocean Athlete.

My father, Captain Jacques Cousteau, would have been 100 years old this month (June 11). He was a man of undeniable charisma and of such single-minded determination that he would not give up on a goal until he had achieved it. His lifelong vision was to help millions of people understand the fragility of life on what he called our "water planet." He would be heartbroken at what is taking place in our seas today, especially the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
"People protect what they love," my father once said. My wish as we mark his 100th year is that we redouble our efforts to love and cherish our planet and the underwater world that he championed.
