NOAA Discovers WWII Navy Patrol Boat off North Carolina

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) embarked on a research mission that led to the discovery of the final resting place of the YP-389, a U.S. Naval patrol craft that was sunk during the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. The ship lies about 20 miles off the North Carolina coast in the area known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." The team discovered a new species of sponge, along with 14 types of coldwater coral – many of which were previously unrecorded in the Bering Sea.
