Johnson Outdoors Acquires Subgear Earlier this year Johnson Outdoors, Inc., owner of SCUBAPRO, officially introduced Subgear to the U.S. market. A powerhouse brand in Europe, Subgear began as Seeman Sub, a German company founded in 1979. Well known for its quality and feature-rich dive equipment at consumer-friendly prices, Seeman Sub was purchased by Johnson Outdoors in 2007 and rebranded as Subgear in late 2009. "By leveraging our research and development expertise along with our contract manufacturing competences, we have delivered a solid mix of mid-priced quality products for value conscious divers," said Joe Stella, Group Vice President at Johnson Outdoors Diving. » Read more about the Subgear brand at subgear.com Grenada's "More Spice" Program Returns For the second year in a row, the Grenada Board of Tourism is offering an incentive program for tourists visiting the "Spice of the Caribbean." "The US is one of the most important markets for Grenada tourism," said William Joseph, Director of Tourism for the Grenada Board of Tourism. "We are pleased to offer this exciting incentive in the hope that more American tourists will discover our beautiful country." Known as "black smokers," the vents, which erupt water hot enough to melt lead, are a little more than three miles deep in the Cayman Trough, 60 miles south of Grand Cayman. "It was like wandering across the surface of another world," said geologist Bramley Murton of the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, who piloted the HyBIS underwater vehicle. "The rainbow hues of the mineral spires and the fluorescent blues of the microbial mats covering them were like nothing I had ever seen before." Missing Air Crew Project An Assistant Radio Operator for a 307th Bomb Group B-24 crew in World War II, T/Sgt. John R McCullough was killed in action in 1944 on a mission off Micronesia's Yap Island. "We thought that with a little luck we might be able to find my uncle's missing plane in the waters off the southeastern reef of Yap," said McCullough's nephew, Patrick Ranfranz, whose fascination with aviation and history prompted him to start a costly two-decade-long search for his uncle's plane. "Our needle in the haystack diving approach provided several hundred spectacular dives, but we needed more information and technology to find the plane — Yap's reefs are deeper and vaster than I could have imagined." Although he hasn't yet found that B-24, his group, the Missing Air Crew Project has located 12 other missing American planes, including sites with remains, and is working with the US government to get the MIA cases returned to the US. "Over the last few years we have received help from a few organizations, which have provided resources such as side scanning sonar and a magnetometer," said Ranfranz. "A few underwater search experts will join us on our July 2010 trip. With their expertise and the additional equipment, we have an excellent chance of finally finding my uncle's missing plane." |
