Tobago Brings Carnival Underwater
Sister island to Trinidad, home of the famous Carnival, Tobago's taking the party a different direction this year with a week-long dive festival. The Underwater Carnival, which runs from June 11-18, is designed to showcase Tobago's rich underwater ecosystem and its unique Caribbean charm. Events will include an amateur underwater photography competition, dive and photography seminars, gear demonstrations, Discover Scuba for kids, and a two-day aquatic art workshop for children between the ages of six and eleven. "This is the first event of its kind on the island and we hope that dive enthusiasts and lovers of the sea will travel to Tobago to enjoy all the events we have scheduled," said Warren Solomon, director of tourism for the THA. "Trinidad is known for its annual celebration of life, Carnival, and our goal is to put the spotlight on Tobago's amazing undersea world and one-of-a-kind aquatic offerings." » To read more, visit tobagounderwatercarnival.com Grouper Moon Project Dives Deeper The Grouper Moon Project, Cayman's Nassau grouper conservation program, received a generous donation of rebreather equipment to its Department of Environment (DoE) staff. Thought to be an ecological and economic corner stone of Caribbean coral reefs, the Nassau grouper is a key indicator species. Since 2004, a seasonal fishing ban has been in effect in all designated grouper spawning areas in the Cayman Islands. "Nassau groupers tend to aggregate and spawn at depths of 130-200 feet, which greatly limit the time and work that researchers can safely do using conventional scuba equipment," said DoE's Research Manager, Phil Bush. "A rebreather will significantly enhance our research diver's ability to study and tag the groupers during the annual two-week spawning cycle." Divetech's Nancy Easterbrook coordinated the donations, which included an Inspiration Classic CCR from Silent Diving and a Pursuit trimix computer from Shearwater Research. Local companies PM Gas donated oxygen tanks and Divetech even donated the training and materials for DoE Research Officer James Gibb to become a certified CCR diver. » For more information, visit reef.org International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame Inducts Four
