Latest Industry News Diving Says Goodbye to Wes Skiles The diving community celebrated the life of a beloved friend on July 28 at Ginnie Springs. Wes Skiles passed away at the age of 52 while diving in Palm Beach County on Wednesday, July 21. While the actual cause of death is unknown, hundreds of friends and family members gathered to share inspirational stories about Skiles' adventurous life. Known for underwater photography and videography, Skiles was also a local advocate for keeping Florida's rivers and springs clean. "All of us are out doing just amazing creative thing that will continue to honor him and his mission," said Jill Heinerth, longtime friend and diving peer. "That's his gift."
The co-founder of Body Glove celebrated his 82nd birthday by diving down 82 meters in a 2-person submarine on Catalina Island. Family members – including all 13 of his grandchildren – and friends – including pro surfer Alex Gray and pro hockey legend Marty McSorely – were on hand at Dive N' Surf in Redondo Beach for a party honoring Meistrell. One of only three men inducted into both the surfing and diving halls of fame, Meistrell is known as a legend who pioneered dive training. » Click here to view more photos from the event! PADI Met up With the Boy Scouts of America Boy Scouts attending this year's annual Jamboree (July 27 through August 3) were joined by PADI and DAN representatives who were on hand to help educate scouts and troop leaders on diving and dive safety. BSA introduced its Scuba Diving merit badge, which was developed in association with PADI, in December of last year. In addition to facilitating Discover Scuba Diving experiences for approximately 50,000 Scouts, PADI Americas staff also assisted troop leaders in establishing their own Scuba Diving Merit Badge programs. Bonaire's Capt. Don Stewart receives Lifetime Achievement Award Since 1962, Captain Don Stewart has dedicated his time and energy to Bonaire's dive industry. And on June 25, he became the first local recipient of the Bonaire Lifetime Achievement Award. Honored for his service and professionalism, his work provides a legacy for future generations. "The government and people of Bonaire are so indebted to this great man who made Bonaire his life's mission," says Ronella Tjin Asjoe-Croes, Director of Tourism. "Without men and women like Captain Don, Bonaire would not be the progressive, conservation-minded destination it now is."
