Scuba Diving magazine ramps up for 2010 with two new staff members
|
It gives me great pleasure to introduce two new members of our Bonnier Dive Group team. This past week we welcomed David Espinosa as the Senior Editor for Scuba Diving and the Undersea Journal, and Patricia Wuest in the multi–faceted role of Managing Editor for Sport Diver, Scuba Diving and the Undersea Journal. David brings strong editorial creativity, vision and skills, as well as a comprehensive global knowledge of the dive world, after several years at the helm of Scuba Diver AustralAsia, and on the edit team for Asian Diver. Like David, Patricia brings a strong breadth and depth of diving and dive magazine knowledge to our group after 16 years of working at Scuba Diving magazine under the previous owners. We're thrilled to have such seasoned pros on our staff as we continue to elevate the quality of our media products across all platforms. Please join me in welcoming them to our unparalleled and passionate team of dive media professionals.

A dive junkie with 23 years of experience, David has authored a guidebook to diving southeast Asia and has written hundreds of articles on everything from destinations, equipment, and profiles on the world's top dive celebrities and underwater photographers.

Her favorite underwater experience? Diving with four whale sharks in Gladden Spit, off Belize. Her dream destination? Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Winner of Curaçao Treasure Hunt
|
Earlier this year, the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) launched a new campaign to draw attention to this diverse destination.
The Curaçao Hidden Treasure campaign sent participants on a two–day, island–wide hunt through the historic capital and across the sandy beaches in search of medallions that were later exchanged for keys. One of these keys opened a treasure chest worth $500,000.
The lucky key holder? Mother of four, Michelle Salge of San Jose, California. Salge is among ten North Americans who won a chance to participate in Curaçao's island adventure through the CTB's online sweepstakes.

Body Glove Co–Founder Bob Meistrell turns 81
|
It's no surprise that Body Glove's boat is named the Disappearance as it's often seen missing from its slip in the Redondo Beach Harbor in Southern California. Most times you'll spot this vessel captained by Bob Meistrell or wife Patty, and often with Scuba Diving magazine's ScubaLab testers in tow. As Co–Founder of Body Glove Wetsuits (along with his brother Bill who passed away in July 2006), he's been a surfer, a lifeguard, but most of all, a diver for many years.
So it's fitting that for Bob's 81st birthday on July 31, 2009, he would set a goal of diving "twice his age." Assisted by the careful planning and preparation of PADI Technical Divemaster Tony Toniolo, Bob jumped into the 58°F water just outside the Redondo Beach Harbor and descended to 162 feet plus an additional 10 for good luck, for a maximum depth of 172 feet. The entire dive lasted 22 minutes.
Post dive celebrations were held at Dive N' Surf dive shop with family members, close friends and fellow divers in attendance. A Redondo Beach City Council Member presented Bob with a Certificate of Achievement on behalf of the Mayor, and Bob proudly accepted his award with a speech stating: "Today I did two dives, one for me, and one for my brother."

The Time Is Right to Visit the Bay Islands!
|
The travel environment for travelers to Honduras's Caribbean islands — Roatán, Utila and Guanaja — remains serene and inviting. The Honduras Institute of Tourism wants visitors to know that tourism–related businesses, including hotels and dive operators, are planning to release special promotions and packages targeted to North American travelers.
Unpackaged. Unfiltered. Unspoiled. This is the majesty of Honduras. From the breathtaking sunsets in Roatán, to the misty green mountains of Pico Bonito, Honduras is a vibrant wonderland, full of adventure and breathtaking beauty. It is the centerpiece of Central America. And you will be as awed by the splendor of it's land as the warmth of it’s people.
"Owners and employees at hotels, tour operators, attractions, restaurants and more are eager to welcome visitors to our country," said Ana Abarca, Minister of Tourism. "We want them to experience Honduras' natural beauty, diverse offerings and friendly people."
