At Last: Vandenberg in Key West, Firmly Set to Sink
After years of financial and legal wrangling and untangling bureaucratic red tape, the dive industry is now finally nearing a day many thought would never come: the intentional sinking of the former United States Air Force missile tracking vessel, the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, south of Key West, Fla.
In fact, a media tour of the docked vessel was scheduled for Mon. May 4, in advance of its planned sinking, between May 21 and June 1, when the ship would become the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s newest artificial reef. just south of Key West. Muting the Lions’ Roar
With a full-scale lionfish invasion is happening in the Caribbean, Peter Hughes Diving and REEF announced a joint effort to launch a research, education and removal project onboard the Sun Dancer II next month.
The project is scheduled to take place from June 13 to June 20 in Belize, where entities there are putting up a $50 bounty per fish to remove the lionfish before they establish a foothold.
